Baroque Sicily, the south-eastern coastline, is arguably one of the greatest white wine areas on the island. Here, the sea and the mountains are never far away, and the soils, rich in limestone and fossils, are strangely reminiscent of Chablis. In this blessed land, local grape varieties mingle with Chardonnay to produce this superb wine with a surprisingly sapid mouthfeel!

Viticulture

Vigna Muti, located in Val Canzeria at 400 metres above sea level in the municipality of Chiaramonte Gulfi (Ragusa), in the south of Sicily. Anzeria is the name of Arabic origin which means 'place of the boars'. The climate is Mediterranean-temperate, and is characterised by strong thermal variations. The soil is limestone and slightly clayey. The vineyard was planted in 1999 with a density of 8300 vines/ha.

Oenology

The grapes harvested in the second half of September are vinified and aged in stainless steel vats.

Domain
Vito Catania is a native of the village of Chiaramonte Gulfi, and the founder of the estate is a witness to the family tradition of wine and olive oil. The estate that bears the name of his village is the result of work begun in 1996 with the precious collaboration of the famous Salvo Foti, a great connoisseur of the history of viticulture on the island and an agronomist before being an oenologist. Today, the estate has about 70 hectares of vineyards in the best areas of eastern Sicily. Voted Estate of the Year by Gambero Rosso in 2012, Gulfi applies recipes that are no secret. They have proven themselves since the dawn of time: organic cultivation (certified) of vines pruned in goblet (albarello) according to tradition, no irrigation, very measured yields, manual harvesting throughout the property, vinification without inputs and using indigenous yeasts; and finally bottling with very low doses of sulphur, in order to give birth to wines of integrity.
