Cerasuolo di Vittoria Classico, Coll. fam. Catania, Gulfi - 2017

In 2017, the year Vito Cattania passed away, his sons made the best selection of their nero d'avola and frappato to produce about 3,000 numbered bt of this great testimonial wine. The label features the rooster that the grandfather first used in the 1970s, with the support of his son Vito. This wine bases its identity on the combination of the power of the Nero d'Avola and the unique fragrance of the Frappato. A great and refined wine, far from the image that one has of Sicilian reds when one does not know them well!

Viticulture

Cerasuolo di Vittoria is a red wine with an ancient and long tradition, which bases its identity on the marriage between the power of Nero d'Avola and the fragrance of Frappato. It is the first and only Sicilian DOCG. At Gulfi, the Stidda vineyard covers about 1 ha in Chiaramonte Gulfi, at an altitude of 420 m, facing west. The climate is Mediterranean, characterised by wide temperature ranges. The soil is clay and limestone.

Oenology

The grapes are usually harvested in the second half of September and vinified in stainless steel tanks with a short maceration at controlled temperatures. The wine is bottled and marketed approximately one year after the harvest.

Suggestions for accompaniment

Veal tartare - Various antipastis - Seafood risotto.

Domain
Vito Catania is a native of the village of Chiaramonte Gulfi, and the founder of the estate is a witness to the family tradition of wine and olive oil. The estate that bears the name of his village is the result of work begun in 1996 with the precious collaboration of the famous Salvo Foti, a great connoisseur of the history of viticulture on the island and an agronomist before being an oenologist. Today, the estate has about 70 hectares of vineyards in the best areas of eastern Sicily. Voted Estate of the Year by Gambero Rosso in 2012, Gulfi applies recipes that are no secret. They have proven themselves since the dawn of time: organic cultivation (certified) of vines pruned in goblet (albarello) according to tradition, no irrigation, very measured yields, manual harvesting throughout the property, vinification without inputs and using indigenous yeasts; and finally bottling with very low doses of sulphur, in order to give birth to wines of integrity.
