VdF Grolleau, Coteaux Kanté, Dom. de Mirebeau - B. Rochard - 2016

Produced from 95 year old vines on gravelly soil on schistous parent rock, this Grolleau (a very Loirean grape) is produced from a tiny yield of 15hl/ha and expresses a sensational density, which makes it almost resemble a Syrah, with its notes of pepper and violets; and its vinosity, which is matched only by its ageing potential. A wine of anthology, an ode to the Grolleau d'Anjou!

Viticulture

95 year old vines! Gravel and clay soils, schistous parent rock. Very low yield of 15hl/ha.

Oenology

After manual harvesting in small crates, 100% destemming. Maceration for 30 days. Aged for 1 year in barrel and 6 months in tank. So2: 1g at racking and 1g at bottling.

Friend and neighbour of Richard Leroy, Bruno Rochard took over the family estate in 1998 in order to convert it to organic farming. Athletic and passionate about the vine, the man doesn't count the hours he spends tending the vines, which are undoubtedly among the best kept in Anjou and even in the whole of the Loire Valley. If Chenin is his strong point, he is not to be outdone in reds with Cabernet Franc of a rare finesse and a grolleau of anthology...
