Schaffhouse, Klettgau Amphore (müller thurgau), Markus Ruch - 2019

It has a light amber colour. The nose has depth and originality, with citrus fruit, citron, orange zest, and a fine mineral filgrane. Made in amphora in the manner of Georgian wines, this wine was macerated on the skins for a year, then bottled without sulphur. It is a very straightforward, sapid wine with a saline structure and a characteristic finish marked by noble bitters.

Viticulture

Although the more than 400 hectares of vineyards in Klettgau are mainly cultivated by small-scale producers, Markus Ruch has always been convinced of the enormous potential of the country's northernmost wine region. The artist-winemaker has been cultivating his own vineyards since 2007. Before that he worked in Burgundy, but also with Marie-Thérèse Chappaz (VS) and Christian Zündel (TI). Today, he does his utmost to make you discover the taste of the clay-limestone terroir of Klettgau. His wines belong to the pantheon of Swiss production.

Oenology

The wine is vinified and aged in amphora with maceration for one year, then transferred to stainless steel tanks to be clarified and bottled without So2. Produced since 2011, 70% is sold for export.

Suggestions for accompaniment

Smoked fish - Cucumber, couscous and bottarga salad - Shrimps with satay - Mature hard cheese.

Domain
Markus Ruch's story is one of a series of encounters. First, he met the world of wine, after a first life as a customer advisor in a bank. Then he met the winemakers with whom he trained. Eight in all, including Hans-Ulrich at Schlossgut Bachtobel, Marie-Thérèse Chappaz, Dominique Derain in Burgundy and Christian Zündel in Ticino. Markus Ruch's unconditional love and fascination for Pinot Noir is certainly the result of his meeting with Dominique Derain, but it was with Christian Zündel, his biodynamic master, that Markus began to talk about the idea of one day having his own vineyard.
