Pinot Gris, Muenchberg A360P, Ostertag - 2018

  • Provenance: Alsace
  • Appellation: Alsace
  • Domain: André Ostertag

This wine has been made famous worldwide under "A360P" which is the cadastral code of the vineyard. For a certain number of vintages, the approval commissions have refused to accept it under its real name because of its atypical woodiness! However, this is not what dominates the tasting, as it is deep and complex. The characteristic sap takes on its full dimension with a fine and salivating minerality, and the finish, floral and spicy, is interminable and of great elegance. The wines from this terroir can be kept for an exceptional period of time, surely more than 20 years.

Viticulture

Muenchberg is a Grand Cru with a total surface area of 17 hectares; the estate owns 2.10 hectares, of which 0.50 hectares are planted with Pinot Gris on the north-eastern point where a limestone vein emerges, mixing with pink sandstone and volcanic sediments dating back 250 million years. Its ideal altitude (between 250 and 300 metres) protects it from excessive heat, while preserving great complexity in the wines. The yields are between 20 and 30 HL/ha depending on the year. Pruning is short, with 2 small canes of 5-6 eyes. Certified organic and biodynamic.

Oenology

After a gentle pressing, it was, as usual at the estate, vinified and aged in Burgundy barrels of Vosges oak for a year and malted there. It was bottled in September.

Suggestions for accompaniment

Calamari sautéed with lemongrass - Sea bass tartar with citrus fruits - Fish curry - Goat cheese.
