Sometimes referred to as "Mostindian" because of its dominant position in fruit production, wine-growing Thurgau attracts attention not only because of its gentle landscape, but also because of its top-quality wines. On the banks of the Untersee, Rhine and Thur rivers, around 250 hectares of vineyards are cultivated. The most famous is probably the upper Thur valley around the town of Weinfelden with its half-timbered houses. The region's famous mountain, the Ottenberg, with its sandy-clay soils on molasse and glacial moraine, similar to the Burgundian terroir in terms of limestone content, is the source of some very nice pinots in particular.
