Definition: Saint Martial

Saint Martial, apostle of Aquitaine and first bishop of Limoges, died before the end of the 3rd century AD. His body was laid to rest in a stone sarcophagus, buried in the heart of Augustoritum, on the site where the Place de la République stands today.
Throughout history, Martial's tomb has always been honoured and miracles have occurred there.
Saint Martial was bishop of Limoges around 250. He was one of the first six bishops commissioned by Saint Peter to evangelise Roman Gaul. It should be noted that the name Martial originates from the god Mars. He was martyred by decapitation like Saint Denis on Mont-de-Mars, which later became Mont-des-Martyres or Montmartre.
Under this saint's name, we will mention the eponymous village located in the Côtes de Bordeaux Saint-Macaire, which produces exclusively white wines. They face the renowned Sainte-Croix-du-Mont vineyard. North of Langon, and east of the Premières Côtes de Bordeaux and Entre-deux-Mers. In the middle of a string of wine-producing villages, Saint-Macaire, Saint-Pierre-d'Aurillac, Saint-André-du-Bois, Saint-Martin-de-Lescas, Saint-Laurent-du-Bois, Saint-Laurent-du-Plan, Sainte-Foy-la-Longue, the small village of Saint-Martial stands out. The wines of Saint-Macaire, and therefore Saint-Martial, are said to be "the Sauternes of democracy."
