Definition: Margaux AOC

This Bordeaux appellation covers five communes in the Médoc region and includes some very fine red wines. The wines are exquisite, medium to full-bodied, with a deep colour, fabulous richness and yet great finesse and a silky finish. Made from Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Malbec, Petit Verdot and Carmenère, they are aged for between 5 and 20 years for the classified growths. The production area is located about 30 kilometres north of Bordeaux, more precisely within the communes of Arsac, Cantenac, Labarde, Margaux and Soussans in the Gironde department. Classified as an AOC with 21 classified growths and 35 bourgeois growths in 1954. Area under production: just over 1,350 hectares. Black grape varieties: Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Carmenère, Côt (or Malbec), Merlot and Petit Verdot. Vinified exclusively as red wine. It can be kept for a very long time, several years to reach its peak quality. Ideal serving temperature: between 15 and 16°C. Enjoy with: leg of lamb, venison or wild boar haunch. The whites produced in the appellation are entitled to the Bordeaux AOC appellation.
